Posture for drivers: long hours at the wheel
Long drives, slumped at the wheel
Hours at the wheel with few breaks, then more sitting at home. The seat does the holding and your back pays for it.

What long drives do to your back
Driving means sitting for hours in one position, often with few chances to stop. Long uninterrupted sitting is linked to more disabling back pain in people who already have it, even though total sitting time alone is a weak predictor.
Walking is one of the best supported ways to recover. A walking programme reduced recurrences of low back pain in a large trial, which makes the breaks between drives worth using.
What helps
- Stop and walk for a few minutes on long drives, even when you are not tired.
- Set the seat so you reach the pedals and wheel without leaning forward.
- Count the sitting after the shift too. The day adds up, not just the drive.
Questions
Can I use BodySignals while driving?
Use it only if wearing headphones while driving is legal where you are, and keep notifications off on the road. The session still records, and you can review it when you stop.
Does sitting all day cause back pain?
Total sitting time is only loosely linked to new back pain. Long bouts without a break make existing pain worse, so breaking up the day is the part worth managing.
Will walks on my breaks be recorded?
Yes. A walk starts on its own after about ten seconds of walking, so a lap of the car park counts without opening the app.
